Therapists have known for years that gentle and soothing music has a positive effect on their clients That is why counselors often recommend instrumental and vocal music to enhance good moods and thoughts. Over the years I have compiled CD’s of various types of music which my clients have found useful in their quest for progress and healing. So I want to share with you some of this music for your well-being. This brief compilation is divided in two parts.
1. Secular, popular or new age music, both instrumental and vocal.
2. Sacred, classical and church music, with instrumental and vocal.
Soothing the Tiger: The Gentle Sound of Herbert Rehbein and His Orchestra is a two-album CD of exceptional soft instrumental music. It's soft ballads, standards and an occasional love song, soothes the spirit. You can easily listen to these renditions and imagine swaying to these melodies.
My favorite album for deep relaxation, sleep and healing is Land of Merlin by Jon Mark. This CD was introduced to me by my acupuncturist and I use it nightly to go to sleep. Or you might like to try Stephen Halpern’s wonderful CD entitled Sleep Soundly, Vol. 2.
There are many popular songs that encourage us and strengthen us. Among these are “You Lift Me Up” by Josh Groban, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” by Simon and Garfunkel, “You Need Me” by Anne Murray. “Keeper of The Stars” by Tracy Byrd to name just a few.
I have found the piano majesty of Beegie Adair and her trio to be very uplifting. Check out her many albums on Amazon and listen to samples of her work.
Sacred, classical and church music is the other category. The classical radio station at USC (KUSC) broadcasts dozens of pieces, 24 hour a day. Many are inspiring and lift the mood of listeners. The Baroque period is a great era of music that show-cases the genius of composers such as J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Pergolesi, Purcell, Scarlatti and many other. The 6 CD set entitled Baroque Gold: 100 Great Tracks is an outstanding compilation of music from that period. This music is ageless and soothes and tantalizes the senses.
Christian hymns are soothing and peaceful in the hands of pianist Mulder and the London Symphony orchestra. The CD is entitled Love Divine, vol 1, and Includes Abide With Me, As the Deer. It Is Well With My Soul, Amazing Grace and others. There are several other volumes of Love Divine albums of Christian hymns available. One reviewer wrote that this music is a “balm for the soul in these troubled times.”
There are many Christian artists who speak to the needs of those who are hurting and in emotional pain, seeking solace and forgiveness. Michael W. Smith is a wonderful example of Christian composers. His songs such as “Draw Me Close,” “Open the Eyes of My Heart,” and “Above All” from his Worship album surrounds you with hope and love.
There are other wonderful contemporary Christian composers like Chris Tomlin (“”Is He Worthy?” “Our God”), Lauren Daigle (“Rescue”), and the late Keith Green (“Easter Song”). Many speak to the pain of depression and anxiety and brokenness who find strength in God.
I hope you enjoy discovering music that speaks to your personal needs. Write to me and share the music that speaks to you.
