Each year several pastors or church workers ask me questions about “spiritual warfare.” There are different reasons this topic comes up. Sometimes a person feels under demonic attack. Sometimes a person asks about the connection between his or her behaviors and the forces of darkness. Other times they want to know more about their spiritual well-being, and what they can do to strengthen themselves for the spiritual warfare at hand.
One of the resources I refer them to is Rev. Jerry Kosberg’s excellent paperback book entitled “In His Mighty Power” with the sub-title “An Introduction to Spiritual Warfare.” This is a Lutheran understanding and approach to spiritual welfare. It is a small book, easy to read, and has many helpful Scriptural passages and references to guide readers on their way to a deeper understanding of the centrality of Jesus in this spiritual battle.
Rev. Kosberg is now an active retired pastor in Arizona. He has served as a parish pastor, served on the national staff of Synod, and as a Regional Mission Facilitator for our Pacific Southwest District. Jerry has taught classes on spiritual warfare in various districts and parishes over the years. I think this introduction to spiritual warfare will find the reader engaged in a deeper understanding of how this warfare works, what is at stake, and a great deal about the reality of the spiritual dimensions at work.
This little book is 143 pages in length and has 18 e
asy to read chapters packed with solid theological understandings about Jesus Christ and His relationship to us and to Satan.
St. Paul wrote in his letter to Ephesus (Eph. 6:12) “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm.” This book argues for us to be warriors in this struggle.
Among the chapters are: The Battle is Real, God’s Provisions for the Battle, The Weapons of Warfare (including prayer, the name of Jesus, the blood of Jesus, the fruit of the Spirit, etc). It becomes clear that while we are to become warriors in this battle, its really about Jesus Christ and His work on the cross.
I highly recommend this book. Even if you know about spiritual warfare, you will learn more. It provides readers with strategies and tools to equip themselves for the battle. The book only costs 5 dollars (plus shipping and handling). It’s an amazing deal. For a copy contact Jerry Kosberg at jmk61568@cox.net.
